Addressing
the Common Core Standards!
(Sequencing)
Standards 2.RL.5, 2.RL. 2
In Abby’s
second grade room, we have been working on sequencing. While the kiddos really seemed to get
sequencing in their daily lives, applying it to a book tended to be a bit more
of a challenge!
A great
book that we use to teach sequencing is Pigsty by Mark Teague. It is able to show that there is more than
just one “middle” to a story; it is a series of several events that
happen. Not only does it get the concept
across, it also leads into a great discussion on keeping those desks tidy!
Next, to
reinforce our sequencing practice, the good ol’ Candy Corn Bandit came to our
classroom on Halloween Day. Thanks, Babbling Abby for the amazing activity! The
kids were truly excited to become detectives and track down the bandit. We
combined all three second grade classrooms. The kids were so engaged that I almost
forgot we had 60 kids walking down the hallway. Somewhere along the way we
included: tip toes, spectacles, and bubbles in our mouths. I am sure we were a
sight to see. It was SO fun!

To wrap
up the week we did a quick assessment to make sure the kiddos had the concept
of sequencing. I read The Curious Garden aloud to the students and had
them fill in the beginning, middle, and end of the story as I read. The
students really enjoyed showing all that they had learned. Make sure you grab Babbling Abby’s, Candy Corn Bandit activity HERE. It would be
great to turn it into the Turkey Gobbler Bandit or Candy Cane Bandit for the
upcoming holidays. If you'd like some graphic organizers, we have a pack available in our TPT store here.
Hope
everyone survived their Mondays!
Katelyn,
Abby & Liesel
