Holiday Parent Gifts - Part 3

Our third and final parent gift...salt dough ornaments!

We did this project in a first/second grade classroom and the overall verdict was that it went "so-so".  They are kind of messy, but here is a sneak peek of what they look like:

Time required:
1 day to make.  3-4 days to dry.

Materials:
  • Salt
  • Flour
  • Water
  • Stamps and Ink
  • Ribbon or Twine
Directions:
Mix equal parts salt, flour, and water (about one cup of each per group of 5-6 students).  Stir to combine and then let students roll mixture into a dough.  Each student may flatten out their dough into a shape.  Press with a stamp and allow to dry 3-4 days, flipping over every so often.

Tips:
  • Don't make dough too thin, they will crumble when dry.
  • Practice with stamps prior to the activity.  Pressing too hard = smear.  Pressing too light = image not completely transferred to ornament.
  • Flour on the table helps the dough not to stick.
  • Parent or volunteer help is fantastic!
Hope everyone found at least one helpful idea for parent gifts!

Happy Holidays!
Katelyn, Abby & Liesel
