Holiday Parent Gifts Part 1

It's that time of year again!  When we as teachers are responsible for childrens' Christmas gifts to their parents! Kidding...kind of.  As teachers we are usually responsible for helping students create a keepsake gift that their parents will treasure.  Each of us is trying a different idea this year, so over the next three days we will share what we did and give a full report.

First up...Liesel's 5th grade classroom.

In the past, I've done the applesauce/cinnamon ornaments.  If you aren't familiar with them, don't try them.  They are messy, take a long time to dry, break easily, and are overall not my favorite thing.  This year I was determined to find something easy:  easy to make, easy to clean up, and easy on the wallet.  Enter Pinterest.  The link is here if you would like to see the original post.

Here is a breakdown on the project:
Time: 45 minutes for 25 students (they came back in small groups)
Cost:  $20.00
Materials:
  • Clear ornaments - I found mine at Michaels for 70% off
  • Acrylic paint - I purchased about 5 colors
  • Paper bags for wrapping
  • Tissue paper for wrapping
To make the ornaments, remove the ornament caps. Students then need to pick 2-4 paint colors (any more and they turned a yucky grayish color) and squeeze drops of paint inside.  Encouraging them to drop the paint down the side of the ornament worked best.  Students were then able to turn, twist, and shake the ornaments to let the paint slide down and create cool patterns.  Wipe off the top with a paper towel, replace the cap, and voila!  I also had the students write their names and the year on them making them a little more special for their family.

I loved this project so much because all I had to do was give the kids a short instruction on making them, help a few students remove the ornament caps, and let them go.  Clean up was minimal and drying was not a problem as the mess is inside the ornament.  I will definitely be doing this again next year!

Stay tuned for a cute calendar idea from Abby!

Happy Holidays,
Abby, Katelyn & Liesel
